Michael Forgy has provided change-focused therapy to individuals, couples and families for more than 4 decades. His overriding concentration is on providing a relational context that allows people to use their own capabilities to bring about positive change for themselves and in how their personal and societal relationships are developed and experienced
Mr. Forgy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Social Work degree; both from the University of Iowa. He has been appointed as adjunct social work faculty at several universities, including the University of Iowa, University of Pittsburgh, Boston University, University of Vermont and the University of Southern California.
In 1980, Mr. Forgy completed mandatory requirements and was recognized as a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers; an entitlement he has continuously maintained. He has been a licensed independent social worker in both Iowa and Vermont. He is designated as a Qualified Mental Health Professional in South Dakota. Mr. Forgy’s existing and continuous licensure in South Dakota is as a private independent clinical social work practitioner. In addition, he was appointed by Governor Daugaard and currently serves on the South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners; the licensure authority for both social workers and behavior analysts in South Dakota.
At different times throughout his career, Mr. Forgy has been trained and/or certified in various modalities of evidence-based clinical service provision; e.g., CBT, DBT, Functional Behaviorism, Motivational Interviewing, SBIRT, Solution-focused, etc. Synthesizing these and other categories of clinical practice within the functional rubric of complexity science has allowed him to develop and practice Creative Communication®; his own integrated form of individual, couple and family psychotherapy.
