Dr. Maxwell has been a licensed psychologist since 2011 performing psychological assessments and individual therapy with adults working in North Carolina and South Dakota. She earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Illinois School of Professional Psychology and completed her pre-doctoral training in evidenced-based cognitive behavioral therapeutic interventions and psychological assessment including an internship at Park Nicolette Clinic in Minnesota and a practicum at Elgin State Mental Hospital in Illinois.
Dr. Maxwell has worked in a variety of private practice settings using evidenced-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness training and EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) for the treatment of psychological trauma, anxiety, and depression. At Scovel psychological Dr. Maxwell conducts a variety of psychological assessments including:
- Diagnosis of ADHD, Bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and other psychological disorders
- Bariatric evaluations
- Court ordered evaluations
- Neuropsychological assessment
In addition to her clinical experience, Dr. Maxwell has 18 years of experience in higher education teaching psychology courses as well as supervising clinical student interns. She was an Associate Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Mount Olive where she supervised a federally funded research project examining drinking and driving related deaths in 4 counties of North Carolina as well as created an internship program. Dr. Maxwell also served as President of the O’Berry Center Foundation, a non-profit organization assisting developmentally delayed individuals in North Carolina, and was a member of the Mental Health Board. She is currently an Adjunct Instructor at Black Hills State University teaching various psychology courses including trauma, abnormal psychology, introduction to clinical psychology, and human sexuality.
In her free time, Dr. Maxwell enjoys outdoor activities in the black hills including camping, hiking, biking and kayaking. Her passion is traveling and Dr. Maxwell and her husband have been to many of the national parks in the United States. Dr. Maxwell also enjoys home improvement projects and spends her Sunday’s in the fall watching football.
